Coffee stains on rugs: milk, sugar and previous treatment
Lift any cup or solids and blot liquid promptly with a clean white cloth. Avoid rubbing the patch or pouring water through the rug. Take a photograph before adding a product. If the material is silk, jute or unknown, stop at careful blotting and request specific advice.
Record milk, sugar and previous coffee treatments
Say whether the coffee contained milk, cream, sugar or a substitute, and describe earlier cleaning attempts. A drink can leave several types of residue, while moisture may have reached the backing. The cleaner needs this information before selecting compatible treatment. A dark ring can also include a drying mark or moved soil.
Old coffee marks and colour change may remain
Some old marks remain despite appropriate cleaning, especially where dyes or fibres have changed. More heat is not a universal answer. Discuss whether spot work or a broader clean is needed to avoid an uneven patch. See cotton care and synthetic rug assessment for construction-specific questions.
Find the relevant next step
Use the rug care directory to find the guide for your material, method or spill. For an assessment, send photographs, dimensions and the care label.
