Conservative testing and careful handling are often more important than aggressive stain removal.
The word antique is commonly used for older hand-made rugs, although age alone does not define value, quality or cleaning requirements. Some rugs may be genuinely historic, while others are later pieces constructed using traditional techniques.

Faded dyes, worn pile, missing fibres, old bleaching, permanent water marks and structural damage are not removable soil. Cleaning may improve clarity and reduce contamination, but it cannot restore material that is no longer present.
Fine soil can settle deeply between the knots and within the rug’s foundation. When people walk across the rug, this grit can act like an abrasive and contribute to continued fibre loss.
Dry soil removal should normally take place before wet cleaning. However, powerful vibration or aggressive beating may be unsafe for weakened textiles. The rug’s condition should determine the level of mechanical action used.
Antique rugs may contain stains that have been present for many years. Tea, wine, grease, urine, ink and water damage can all alter fibres and dyes differently.
Previous attempts using bleach, household stain removers or strong detergents may have caused permanent colour loss. A responsible approach should prioritise the stability of the rug rather than pursuing complete stain removal at any cost.
Some stable antique rugs may be suitable for controlled washing. Others may require low-moisture treatment or a process designed to limit dye movement and mechanical stress.
The choice should depend on fibre condition, colour stability, foundation strength and the type of contamination present. A method that is safe for a modern wool rug should not automatically be applied to an antique piece.
Antique rugs should dry evenly, with suitable airflow and support. Uneven moisture loss may contribute to rippling, shrinkage or shape distortion.
The rug should not be placed back onto wood flooring while the reverse remains damp. Fringes should also be arranged carefully rather than left folded or twisted during drying. London humidity, cool rooms and limited ventilation can all extend drying times.
