Food stains on rugs: identify the ingredients before treatment

Lift solid food gently with a suitable blunt edge without pressing it into the pile, then blot accessible liquid with a clean white cloth. Do not rub the affected area or add a general-purpose kitchen cleaner. Keep the ingredient list or packaging if the food contains strong colour, oil or an unfamiliar additive.

Ask about your rug

Identify fats, proteins, sugars and colourings

A single spill can combine fats, sugars, proteins and colourings. Tell the cleaner what was spilled and whether it was hot, fresh or already dried. Previous washing and spot products also matter. The rug’s composition determines what treatment is compatible with those residues; one food-stain recipe is not suitable for every textile.

Food colourings and contrasting spot-cleaned patches

Some colourings can leave a permanent mark. Ask what is likely to improve and whether spot work could create a visibly cleaner patch. For related contamination, see grease or chocolate; children’s rugs still need label-led care.
