Ink stains on rugs: identify the pen and avoid spreading
If liquid ink is fresh, blot carefully with a clean white absorbent cloth without rubbing. Do not pour alcohol, hairspray or another household solvent onto the rug. A product that dissolves ink can also spread it or affect the rug’s colour and backing. Keep the pen or cartridge for identification.
Keep the pen or cartridge for identification
Tell the cleaner whether the source was a ballpoint pen, fountain pen, printer cartridge or marker, and whether it was labelled permanent or washable. Those descriptions help assessment but do not guarantee removal. Provide the fibre information, time since the spill and a record of any attempted treatment.
Ask about testing before treating an ink mark
Ink may penetrate beyond the pile, and some colour changes cannot be safely reversed. Ask whether a controlled test is sensible before broader treatment. See mixed-fibre assessment for complex surfaces and children’s rug care for craft-related spills.
Find the relevant next step
Use the rug care directory to find the guide for your material, method or spill. For an assessment, send photographs, dimensions and the care label.
