Wine stains on rugs: blotting, dyes and treatment limits

Blot fresh wine with a clean white absorbent cloth, lifting the liquid without rubbing. Keep changing to a clean part of the cloth. Avoid adding white wine, salt, bleach or a household mixture: a second substance can introduce residue or further dye change. Do not soak a delicate or unidentified rug.

Ask about your rug

Record the wine type, age and products already used

Tell the cleaner whether the spill was red or white wine, when it happened and which products were applied. Sugar, colour and other residues may need different treatment. The fibre, dye stability and backing determine what can safely be attempted; the age or darkness of the stain alone does not select a method.

Distinguish remaining wine from permanent colour change

A remaining mark may be a permanent colour change rather than removable wine. Aggressive repeat treatment can damage pile while failing to improve it. For wool or mixed yarns, read wool rug care; valuable hand-knotted pieces need the checks in the Persian rug guide.
