Rug cleaning around pets: hair, accidents and product precautions

Loose hair, a visible accident and persistent odour need different assessment. Tell the cleaner which problem you want addressed and whether liquid reached the backing, underlay or floor. A surface stain can be smaller than the contaminated area below it. Repeatedly adding water may spread the problem.

Share the relevant product information

Keep pets away from the working area and follow the instructions for any products used. A pet-friendly description is not a universal guarantee for every animal or exposure. Discuss particular concerns before booking and ask when pets may return. Do not mix household deodorising products or add a new treatment while awaiting an assessment.

Set realistic expectations

Old contamination may have altered dyes or affected a backing, and cleaning cannot promise to reverse permanent damage. Persistent odour can also involve material beneath the rug. Ask what the quoted treatment includes and whether further assessment is needed. Read pet urine assessment for accidents and odour investigation when the source is unclear.

Find the relevant next step

Use the rug care directory to find the guide for your material, method or spill. For an assessment, send photographs, dimensions and the care label.
