Rug odours: find the source before adding a treatment
Describe the smell and when it appears: after a spill, during damp weather, following cleaning or whenever the room is closed. Avoid masking it with fragrance or repeatedly adding deodorising powder. A smell can come from the pile, backing, underlay, floor or another item nearby, so locating the source matters.
Check the backing, previous wetting and products
Tell the cleaner about pets, past wetting, stored conditions and previous products. Inspect the underside only if the rug can be moved safely. Dampness, deteriorating backing or contamination below the rug may require a different response from surface soil. The proposed treatment should explain which source it can address.
Resolve damp and follow drying instructions
No odour-removal guarantee is appropriate before assessment. Persistent moisture must be resolved rather than covered up. Use pet urine guidance for known accidents and seek suitable advice for suspected mould. Confirm drying and return-to-use instructions before replacing the rug on the floor.
Find the relevant next step
Use the rug care directory to find the guide for your material, method or spill. For an assessment, send photographs, dimensions and the care label.
