Suspected mould on a rug: assess moisture and contamination first

Visible growth, a persistent musty smell or a history of damp needs assessment beyond routine spot removal. Avoid using or disturbing a visibly affected rug in an occupied room. Do not dry-brush, vacuum or apply bleach to suspected mould as a home remedy. Seek advice appropriate to the extent and circumstances.

Ask about your rug

Trace the moisture source and contamination history

Identify the moisture source and whether the floor, underlay or building is affected. A rug clean cannot correct a leak, drainage problem or continuing damp. Explain flood history and any potentially contaminated water exposure before collection or treatment. Material, damage and contamination may make cleaning unsuitable.

Confirm whether specialist assessment is needed

No promise of decontamination or safe reuse can be made from appearance alone. Specialist advice or replacement may be needed. The outdoor rug guide explains drying and storage, while odour assessment distinguishes an unresolved source from a surface mark.

Find the relevant next step

Use the rug care directory to find the guide for your material, method or spill. For an assessment, send photographs, dimensions and the care label.
