Pet urine in rugs: surface marks, backing and odour

Blot a fresh accident with disposable absorbent material, keeping pets away while you work. Avoid scrubbing, soaking the area or combining deodorising and stain-removal products. Tell the cleaner what happened. If liquid reached the floor or underlay, treating only the visible surface may leave part of the problem untouched.

Ask about your rug

Describe repeat accidents and check beneath the rug

Explain whether the accident was recent, repeated or discovered after drying. Photograph both sides if the rug can be moved safely. The assessment should consider fibre, dye changes, foundation, backing and contamination below the rug. An odour masked by fragrance is not evidence that its source has been removed.

Discuss backing damage and pet return precautions

Old urine can leave permanent colour damage, and a weakened backing may limit treatment. Ask what the proposed work covers and what cannot be guaranteed. Follow product-specific precautions before allowing pets back. Read cleaning around pets and investigating rug odours before arranging a quotation.
